and a person was selling a collection of relics at an auction. It is free for just watching.

I want to buy some stuff but I didn't take my wallet...........

At last, I spotted foreigners visiting Hanok village.

At this place, you can experience the tea ceremony for free.

and at this place, you can experience making the kimchi for free. also there are many many many chances to experience the Korean culutre in Hanok village.

Yesterday, I wandered about the half of the Hanok village and maybe next week, I will go around the rest half. bye bye bye~~~~~~~~~~~~

It took really really really long time to see you again.

I have returned.^^

From Feb. 2 to Feb. 4, it was Seol-nal in Korea, a special festive day.

I have visited my several relatives and talked, played, and had some delicious food.
At the last day of Seol-nal, I went to Hanok village and just took a walk.

Homigot - one of the best place to watch the sunrise

Homigot is the one of the best place in Korea to appreciate the sunrise on the first day of the year. It is located at Pohang-city in Gyengsangbuk-d0. Because it is the first place where we can see the sun in Korean peninsula, it is very crowded on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
I want to go there because it is so close to me........but I don't know whether I can.
Anyway, if I catch the chance to visit there, I will post my pictures on my blog^^.

This sculpture is called 'The hand of win-win'. I could not find better English word. However, I expect all of you can understand the meaning of it. It consists of two parts, one hand in the sea and the other hand on the land. It was built to pray for the harmony of the Korean faced with new millenium.

This is the light-house located near the hands. It was built in 1903, almost 100 years ago. Due to this fact, it was designated as a ruins.

This is the picture which took the moment when the squids were dried by wind. Because Pohang-city is adjacent to the sea, the fishery is prospering and there are some representative product of Pohang, such as Guamegi. I will show them next time^^.

This is the Haemaji park. Every January 1, there is a festival congratulating the new year. If you have a chance to go there, then you will experience something great.

I am planning to go there this January 1.

This is called 'the flame of millenium'. There is a kindling in the iron sphere. Every year, people ignite a sacred torch using it.

This is mulhoi(the raw fish soaked in water). It is one of the representative food in Pohang.

Han-geul - Korean Language

Here is a unique alphabet system in Korea that is incomparable to other languages. We call it, Hangeul. It has been as a transcribing means for the Korean language since it has been promulgated in 1446. Its long usage has been considered as a rudimental factor for Korean pride and spirit.

1. The times without Hangeul

Before Hangeul was invented, Koreans used the Chinese characters to communicate. As Latin has been used throughout Europe in the Middle Ages, the Chinese characters have been widely used as a common language for in East Asia. But the difference between the speech and the alphabets has brought disparate between the two. This was because the Chinese characters were difficult to transcribe, causing people to have many difficulties in studying the Chinese characters. Although Seolchong from Silla Dynasty arranged Idu, a way of transcribing Chinese in Korean style, lack of basic understanding the Chinese characters hindered the people to use them in their daily life. Above all, farming was prioritized in those days, making it impossible for the commoners to study the characters while putting their work aside.

2. Suffering of the common people

Knowledge was power in those days, meaning literacy was connected directly to social vested rights. The hard lexicon system constituted of Chinese characters determined and fixed the social status. An illiterate could not even understand the questions on the civil service examinations. The application process for the examinations was obviously limited to the sons of high social status. Considering that the civil service examination was a gateway to enter the government service in those days, the Chinese characters and the Chinese writings were the suitable means for the noble to keep the hereditary succession of wealth and power. What is more, the difficulties in reading Chinese were a great burden for the commoners. It wasn’t unusual for the illiterate people who can’t even read their criminal charges to get arrested and falsely charged with the crime they have never committed.

3. Hangeul, the great invention

In 1443, the invention of an alphabet system itself consisting of 28 letters, was an epoch-making and unprecedented creation. King Sejong himself invented the Korean script or Hunminjeongeum for the illiterate people to settle their unfair charges by solving the aforementioned problems and to establish a more beautiful and better society for people by teaching them morals and knowledge. Hangeul, of which its striking excellence is acknowledged all over the world, is rooted on its wise and humanitarian intention. As a matter of fact, it was a revolution that the ability to decipher the structure of alphabets and the procurement of vested right limited to the noble class has been doled out to each individual. It is a surprise that King Sejong was in the center of this revolution as the leader of the privileged class. Despite the strong opposition of the Cabinet members of the court including Choe Manri, King Sejong distributed Hunminjeongeum tenaciously, convincing the Cabinet members with his scholar insight. King Sejong’s benevolence is respected and he is regarded as a sage king.
The adage written in Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon or the expounder says, the wise can understand in the forenoon, even the foolish can understand in ten days, meaning Hunminjeongeum is easy to learn. It goes without saying that simple and systematic Hangeul compared to broad and complex Chinese characters has contributed greatly to put an end to illiteracy. The peasants of the Middle Ages were able to read and write. The distribution of knowledge was the pride of Korea, exceeding the cultural standard set in the West. The peasants were able to realize social unification and the agricultural development as the books in Hangeul on faming and manners have become pervasive. The popularity of Korean novels led the prevalence of the publishing business and played the role of locomotive to leap forward to modernization from the medieval society.

4. Excellent Hangeul

All alphabets used in the world are classified into ideogram and phonogram. The Chinese characters are typical example of ideogram as each character has its own specific meaning. However, ideogram has a big shortcoming. It requires new characters as the number of materials and ideas increase in line with the social development. The inconvenience of memorizing new words has become inevitable when using the ideographic system. On the other hand, phonogram is a linguistic system that each character corresponds to a specific sound, making it easier for the speakers to manage abundant sounds of a language.
Phonogram can be subdivided into syllabic and phonemic alphabets. Syllabic alphabets, Japanese Kana characters as an example, consist of symbols for consonants and vowels such as ‘Ka’ and ‘Yeo’ that do not distinguish between the consonant and vowels. Roman alphabets and Hangeul are one of the phonemic alphabets that are more developed than the syllabic alphabets. Hangeul can express the sounds of the Korean language by combining initial sound, medial vowel and final consonant. This however, has been reduced to only 24 alphabets, displaying more economical and simple linguistic system than that of Chinese and Japanese.
Some scholars itemize feature alphabets as further more developed alphabet system. The feature alphabets separate one sound from another. Hangeul is sometimes classified feature alphabets. For instance, let’s take a look at the Korean alphabets, ‘ㅋ’ and ‘ㄲ.’ Both Hangeul are made based on ‘ㄱ.’ We can intuitively know that ‘ㅋ’ and ‘ㄲ’ are the alphabets which phonetic features (aspirate, fortis) are added by adding strokes to ‘ㄱ.’ In other words, Hangeul is classified into phonemic alphabets, however, it is linguistically better and takes more scientific approach.
Hangeul also has some noteworthy characteristics in its forming principle. The first principle is the principle of simplicity. The basic formation of consonants and vowels of Hunminjeongeum pursuits extremely concise and minimal form. It is interesting that Hangeul can be structured with the basic figures consisting of triangle, circle, square, point and a straight line. The next is the principle of adding-stroke. All the cha racters of Hangeul are developed by simply adding strokes to basic characters for aspirate and fortis. In addition, basic forms are shaped in bisymmetric figures on their central axes. This bisymmetric structure offers a sense of balance and stability.

5. The excellence of Hangeul is useful until now

The systematic and simple system theory of Hangeul is applied much more usefully today. Hangeul is the optimal alphabet for sending text messages and documenting by using electronic word process in an information-oriented era. Hangeul is easiest to work with on a 12-button cell phone keypad and 60-button computer keyboard. It is especially useful when making a 12-button cell phone keypad for sending text messages. Either Cheonjiin or the stroke-adding system, all the keyboard layouts used domestically is devised on an extension of the invention principle of Hangeul. Thanks to its facile formation principle, Hangeul excels both Chinese characters and Japanese Kana in efficiency. Seeing the broadcasting programs featuring the foreign immigrants in Korea, they often are surprised by the convenience of using Hangeul cell phone keypad.
We are now living in the era where design has become crucial. Hangeul follows a bound-writing character system like Chinese characters, however, unbound-writing system can also be applied like Japanese Kana and alphabets in the West. Moreover, it can be written in both horizontal and vertical ways, offering abundant ideas to design the beauty of the Hangeul. Hangeul design, currently boasting its dynamic uniqueness in language, displays its properties in tandem with the design.

6. Get to Know Hangeul

As stated above, Hangeul’s beauty and scientific approach to the language are more than enough to draw people’s attention. That would be why Hangeul has been used constantly for a long time in Korea. In 2008, Korea celebrated the 562nd birthday of distribution of Hangeul. Hangeul Day which falls on October 9 has become more thriving and diversified each year, meaning the interest in Hangeul by Korean is on the rise. Products on Hangeul are launched and people are making efforts to use Hangeul correctly from far and near. By learning more on Hangeul, you can understand and take a step closer towards Korea and Koreans. As you already know, Koreans can’t live a day without Hangeul.

Peace Square in Mok-po city

Tomorrow is the day of opening school. At last, long-long summer vacation meets the destination point......................That is, ponderous and heavy school work will be burdened with me........However, I would make efforts to control myself.

Today, I want to introduce 'Peace Square' in Mok-po city.

At first, Peace Squre had a different name. After Dae-joong kim, ex-president of Korea had received a Nobel prize for peace, however, Mok-po city changed its name to commemorate the great incident.

At Peace Square, a long road abreast of West Sea is full of liveliness and activity - there are a lot of people who are enjoying riding a bicycle, and inline-skating. People also enjoy taking a walk at night watching beautiful night view.

Furthermore, the end of the street is connected with Young-san river edge.

People can enjoy fishing.

When I got there, I could find several foreigners strolling the square enjoying the view. I think if you can go to Mokpo-city, then it would be a good idea to go sight-seeing the Peace Square.

Ah, gotbawee is also next to the Peace Square, so you can watch both sceneries.

About a week ago, I went on a trip to Mokpo with the recommendation of my relatives.

At first, I thought that there wasn't almost nothing to go sightseeing, but I realized that my groudless guess was wrong. There were a lot of place to visit, enjoy, and relax.

1. Gotbawee (I don't know the exact name of it. It is called Gotbawee because it resembles korean traditional hat)

This rock was formed by weathering of sea-water and wind. It is famous because of its shape. People can enjoy the view of the rock and sea, because the city made a park around this place. I visited there at night, and I enjoyed fantastic illumination made by lighting fixture. Also, there were a lot of foreigners who came to see the rock.

Ah, now I have to go to participate in my pingpong club. I will continue my posting after the meeting ends.

Seoul Cutural Experience-2

I had a matriculation ceremony on March 2, at POSTECH(Pohang University of Science and Technology). That is, my university life has begun, so I think that there would be less time than that when I was in high school to meet you through my blog.

Seoul Cultural Experience with Foreigners

I have participated in above-named event on maybe January 22?? I can't remember the exact date. Anyway, I went to Seoul National Central Museum, Namsan Hanok village, and Namsan tower....

It is the event that have same purpose of that in August 15. There would be the another posting that was posted on August, 15.

It is the front of Seoul City Hall. It's appearance has changed compared to that in August,15.

It is the Ice Rink which is located in front of the hall. I saw this for the first time.... This place was covered with grass.

I think EVERYONE can enjoy his or her skating in this place. As a evidence.... There is one foreign coulple who is taking pictures. After taking pictures, they enjoyed skating. I hope you to come Seoul and enjoy a variety of interesting activities.

I also introduce the wild flower of Korea to you, as well as the tourist spot of Korea. Hmm, at first, I planned to make the post about 1 month ago ,but my laziness... pulled me into sedentary state.^^... Anyway, from today, I'd like to plot the catalog of flowers.

1. Erigeron thunbergii var. glabratus

Its name is 구름국화(Cloud chrysanthemum?) in Korean. Cloud chrysanthemum? is not exact... so I think that you'd better refet to above nomenclature...

It lives on Mt. Baek-du, which is located across the borderline between China and North Korea.

What is Suneung, 수능?

Su neung is a kind of college entrance exam prepared by an official organization such as collegeboard in USA which makes SAT, AP and so on.

Suneung is different from SAT reasoning test and subject test in some ways. We can take Su-neung only once a year, which is different from SAT that we can take Jan., Mar.(only for American), May, Jun., Oct., Nov., Dec.. Because there is no way to complement the lost points in Su-neung, the pressure senior get during their last year of high school is so huge that there are some accidents.

Su-neung consists of several subjects, such as Korean, Math Ga or Na, English, Social Studies or Science, and so on. It takes almost 9 hours........ Too long isn't it? SAT takes about 4hours at most.^^

So I'd like to show you some pictures related to 수능.
They are chocolate given to seniors for their high score in exam and admission to the universities.

This cup has same purpose. It seems that it was given exactly 100 days before the Su-neung.

The students are taking exam.

At D-day, there are some students who are likely to be late for the test center. Then, they are transported by police car or other vehicle^^

Juniors and freshmen are cheering for their seniors' high score in Su-neung. I wonder if American or people of other countries does same thing..

Parents are also praying for their offspiring's high score................

Can you understand their mind?..........

After exam, they are littering their books.............because there won't be no exam to take in high school. So it is pointed as a problem that continuous studying is not done.

I am also a senior. But I didn't take it because I applied to early application..... How about your country? Does your country have similar exam?

Special Journey to Jeju Island - The LAST day - 1

Taewangsasingi drama set. There was a TV drama called Taewangsasingi, in which the story in Goguryeo(a strongest ancient kingdom of Korea) is unrolled. I have never seen it because there was no chance to watch TV............. I would introduce the drama later.

The next place is sepjicoji. It is famous as a place for drama 'ALL IN' set. Also, I have never seen it... Some day, there will be an opportunity.ㅋ

So nice and beautiful view!!!! Due to time limit, I couldn't enjoy whole place. If I have another chance to go there, I will fully appreciate it.

Special Journey to Jeju Island - The day 2 : YACHT

I also rode a yacht. White hull, broad and grand mast..................For some reasons,.... these are not befitting to me^^, because I'm not that rich and civilized person..... I will be ~~

Uh uh. Where am I? .......hmm if you look leftside, oh there am I.^^

It was nice and cool with smooth and mild sea wind. I can't say how to express my feeling. It was really..~~gorgeous^^

If you take this yacht, you can enjoy limitless raw fish, cookies, fruits, haute wine and other things to eat for free, once you pay for riding. I wanted to enjoy all the things, but, because of my age, I couldn't taste wine and because of my capacity and expectation for fantastic dinner, I oppressed my impulse to eat^^. Also, if you come here, you can use it for various time-period, from 30 minute riding to some hours riding.

The person who is at the center is the host of the yacht company. I just asked him to take picture with me, but after taking, he kept spruiking about his accomplishment^^. According to his speech, he is the pioneer of yacht corporation for common people. Previously, yacht was available for only specific, special group or individuals. However, by making yacht company for usual people, person like me can enjoy riding a yacht now for rather low fee. He also run highclass sea-food buffet. Our member had dinner there. I want to show you there with food, but I was busy eating......... I couldn't take pictures.^^

The next place is pillar-shaped joints. NO,no,no. It was jeongbang waterfall. Sorry. I forgot visiting there.^^

I heard that this waterfall is unique because the water goes right into the sea, not through river or any other waterway. Around here, I saw Haenyeo. I will explain later about that. You can see the head of a person in the below picture, right?

Next, pillar-shaped joint. The structure was created before long time, maybe antedelivian time?^^ Its shape is hexagon. I don't know why the shape became like that, but I think it is related to the principle by which the hive is made. For more accurate information, I hope you use encyclopedia or other media.^^

Teddy bear museum. At first, I thought that the teddy bear museum was not suitable for jeju, because there was no relation between them. However, after I visited there, my view on it changed. There are a lot of things worth sightseeing.

These arrangements were novel and creative to me. world map, fashion show model, war model, and so on. There were also many foreigners. So I think if you visit there, you won't regret.

Special Journey to Jeju Island - The day 2

After the wonderful, fantastic, and dream-like first day.............................
Riding a bus, we followed the coastal road, watching the beautiful ambience and bluish sea. You can see the its image through below video. Due to my rather awkward ability to take a video using my digital camera, its quality isn't that good.........Oh, I'm so sorry. The capacity of the video file exceeds the 100MB limit. Later, I would find out the way to post it. so sorry not being able to show you..

There were also a lot of people who were enjoying fishing. Sometimes, waves would overwhelm us.^^

One of the fishermen caught these fishes.

The next place was Hanrim Park, which is located north-western side of Jeju. The orginal state of that place was arid, infertile, and bleak : wildland or wasteland. However, a pioneer ,named Song, Bong Kyu, bought this land and exploited it. The place where there was only rough sand have become,ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

There are three caves in Hanrim Park: Hyeobjae, Ssangyong, and Hwanggum.

Special Journey to Jeju Island - The day 1 - 2

After riding a horse, we went jeju folk village.

As implied by the name of it, in the folk village, we could witness the traditional Korean houses(almost, nonono all were the Choga-house, whose name was derived from its roof which was made of a lot of bundles of straw). Especially, the house was not typical traditional house. It was specific for Jeju: the arrangement of the buildings, other everyday objects, and so on.

This is the Choga-jip. Can you see the roof which is fastened by loops? Because of the geographic features of the jeju, the intensity of the wind is so powerful that sometimes, ㅋㅋ, the house can be blown off^^.

Maybe, cows....... Once upon a time, they were nurtured like this in a cage called oe-yang-gan

Black pigs...... They usually live on the droppings of the people.... Jeju people intentionally raised them by setting their cages near the toilet. It is said that the meat of them is more elastic and delicious than that of ordinary pigs.

In the past, to seize the criminal, the organization like the present police station used the drawing. Rather humorous, right?

What I was seizing is called Gonjang. It was used to punish some misdemeanor. It looks nothing more than light beating but, according to some real stories, flesh may burst due to the power and the bleeding............. It is terrible to imagine the effect.

Do you remember those black pigs? Yeah!!!!! Your guess is right. Those meat are their kinds. The taste is also fantastic as I expected.^^

Special Journey to Jeju Island - The day 1 - 1

I have just been to the post office to send my application package as EMSs. It took 44,000 won!! So expensive for a person who is poor and impoverished like me ^^.

Anyway, today, I would like to recollect my trip^^(In fact, it was a VANK camp) to Jeju Island from Oct,25 to Oct, 27. It was a great, fruitful, and novel experience to me. I have taken an airplane for the first time since I was born^^, I also have put my foot on yacht for the first time, and so many things!!!!!

Hmm then, let's become mesmerized with the Jeju island.

It is a plane ticket. With it, I went through the departure procedures in the airport.
And in the airplane, I was surprised that its hull was rather smaller than I had expected. But, That's ok~~
When the plane started to accelerate, oh I could feel the inertial force firsthand. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~In the end, I arrived at Jeju international airport. I wanted to take a picture but the time was limited.

And then, delicious lunch

The meat on the chopping board is called Dombae-gogi. That's because it has been served on the chopping board, not on the dish.

The red food(Center) was a.......... some kinds of fish^^ I can't remember the exact name. Next to it, baked tile fish is located. I have heard that it is expensive food. So I ate it much.^^ The taste was .. good, great,...fantastic!!! ㅋㅋ

Then, let's go to the first scenic spot!!!

SANGUMBURI. Idiosyncratic name..ㅋㅋ It is the dead crater. You can see the image right down. It was so immense that I could imagine the power degree of the eruption. So large, isn't it?

Now, it is covered with the greenish plants, giving us fresh air. It is reported that Samgumburi is important academically for its various flora.

The road to there was sided by snowish white saw grass, which doubled the placid and serene ambience of pleasant surrounding. I took the picture, however, due to my mistake................................;;

In front of the main gate, there was a Dol-harbang(Stone old man). So cheese~~~~ good good good

Next destination was a place where we can

ride a horse. I don't know the exact English word to express it..... There, I, also for the first time, rode a horse. It was bracing for me to depend my body on it, but I expected it to be interesting. However, the way hosts treated their horses, such as beating to make stubborn horses more obedient, was displeasing for me.
Anyway, it was a great experience to me.

Taekwondo is a martial art form and sport that that uses the hands and feet for attack and defense. The focus of Taekwondo is on training and disciplining the mind along with the body. For those learning the martial art it plays four different roles.

First, Taekwondo as an Exercise

Taekwondo is a good exercise for children who are still growing as well as a good way for grown-ups to increase their physical endurance. Taekwondo's movements require extensive use of the joints, which increases the limberness of one's body. Since there is kicking, jabbing and shouting involved, it's also a great way to relieve stress and get a good workout.
Second, Taekwondo as a Bare Handed Martial Arts Form

Taekwondo learners attack the opponent with their bare hands and feet. What sets this apart from other martial arts forms are the powerful and various leg movements involved, and which have enabled it to become a worldwide martial art. Taekwondo's attack is aggressive, but at the same time the focus is more on the defense aspect. This can act positively for those wanting to learn Taekwondo as a way of self defense for practical purposes, even in modern times.
Third, Taekwondo as a Sport

Taekwondo is an official competitive category in major world sporting events such as the Olympics, Panam Games, Asian Games, All American Games, and South American Games. Competitive Taekwondo involves safety gear and set attacks and defenses as to limit the amount of damage possible. This way, competitive martial artists can enjoy the thrill of competing with less risk.
Fourth, Taekwondo as an Educational Method

Taekwondo trains the body, but does as much to develop the mind as well. The objective of learning Taekwondo is to foster growth in both areas in order to become a more mature human being. Taekwondo learners receive repeated etiquette lessons along with the attack and defense skills to build and strengthen their character.

In Spring, cherry blossom is full-blown, making beautiful flower tunnel; In Summer, coooooooool acacia; In Fall, fall foliage and fallen leaves are making special atmosphere. Taking a walk along the circumvolution is also a zest for people. Especially, the sunrise which is seen from the Sajik park is magnificent. However, I couldn't get the picture. (8)-4 Welcoming the moon at the Worldcup stadium.

Designed as environment friendly stadium, Gwanju Worldcup stadium was respected as 'Most beautiful stadium in the world' by FIFA inspectors. It also has unusual appearance, emboding the traditional play in this province, 'Ko'. It is said that it is standing up to comparison to say that welcoming the moon gives people wonderful impression.^^ I also want to go and see the moon^^

(8)-5 Bingwoldang and the sprayer of river, Hwangryong.

Bingwoldang is the gym of the Wolbong Seowon. Seowon is a kind of high school of Joseon dynasty. A wide number of birds, such as aigret and crane, inhabit here because of its good condition for lives.
Also, the sprayer of river, Hwangryong is said to be so beautiful with mysterious atmosphere.

Gwang-ju is the largest city in Jeollanamdo and one of the five metropolitan cities, such as, Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, and Busan.
As I have lived in Jeollabukdo since I was born, I also don't know that much about Jeollanamdo. So I will write this text as a learner.^^
Hmm, anyway, Gwangju is important city in Honam, and recently there was an important incident in Korean history. I would write later.
First, Gwangju is famous for 8 wonderful sights and 5 delicious food.(The city declared them as like that.)

(8) - 1 : Mountain, Mudeung.

In Mt, Mudeung, the spirit of southern people is contained. This mountain is also representative symbol of the city. In each season, you can enjoy the characteristic view of the beautiful mountain.

Winter : Snow-sight. Wonderful, fantastic
I remember that Mt, Mudeung is famous for watermelon. I want to eat it someday after I make biggggg money^^

(8) - 2 : The agora in front of the Prefecture of Jeollanamdo and Chunjan-ro night-view.

The agora is the symbol of 5.18 pro-democracy movement and the exact place where civil convention was held.(I don't know I choose right word, convention.)
Especially, Chungjangro is the center of shopping and fashion and iridescent light is everywhere. The stream of youngsters visit here, making this place brisk, dynamic place.

Wait before going to (8) - 3. I want to introduce 5.18 pro-democracy movement.
You may know that until late 1980s, some autocrat dominated in Korea, from first president Seung man, Lee to Jeong Hui, Park and Du Hwan, Jeon. Among them Mr. Jeon is related this incident. After he earned the authority as a head of the country through Dec. 12, 1979 mutiny, there were a lot of resistance agaist him. That's because, after the death of Park, civillian believed that finally democracy came to them. However, Jeon's coup d'etat baffled the longing desire of the citizen.
Jeon decided to throw airborne troops into Gwang-ju and there, fight between soldiers and citizens occured. In the process, a lot of innocent people were dead cruelly... Although this resistance ended as failure, it eventually brought about almost real democracy after 7 years.

So, today I want to finish now. I have to study for the midterm exam next week ㅠㅠ. Although I was admitted to the university, I should get good score to go abroad.....

Chuseok - one of the biggest two korean holiday!!!

Chuseok is one of Korea’s most largely celebrated holidays. It is a time when families and friends gather to share food and enjoy their time together, giving thanks to their ancestors for the year’s bountiful harvests. This year, Korea’s representative traditional holiday of Chuseok falls on September 14th of the solar calendar. It will last three days, from September 13th to September 15th and marks a prime opportunity for foreign visitors to tour Korea’s cities and experience Korea’s culture while all the bustling crowds are away visiting family relatives. Let us look a little deeper in to what Chuseok represents for Koreans.

- Chuseok (Hangawi)

As one of Korea’s three major holidays, the other two being Seollal (New Year’s Day) and Dano (the 5th of the 5th month of the year according to the lunar calendar), Chuseok is also referred to as Hangawi, which means the very middle of August, or August 15th according to the lunar calendar. As an agrarian society throughout history, Hangawi was the day in which Koreans thanked the ancestors for the year’s harvest and shared their abundance with family and friends. Although the exact origin of Chuseok is unclear, Chuseok can be traced back to a religion related to the moon from ancient times. The sun was considered natural, but the full moon that came once a month to brighten the dark night was seen as a grateful presence. Therefore, festivities took place on the day of the largest full moon, on August 15th of the lunar calendar, and thus became, and is to this day, one of the most important days of celebration.

-Chuseok Customs

On the morning of Chuseok Day, Songpyeon (type of Korean rice cake) and food prepared with the year’s fresh harvest are arranged to give thanks to ancestors through Charye (ancestor memorial service). After Charye, families visit their ancestors’ graves and engage in Beolcho, where weeds around the burial grounds are removed. As the night nears, families and friends enjoy the beautiful view of the full harvest moon and play folk games such as Ganggangsullae (Korean circle dance).

- Charye (ancestor memorial services)

On Chuseok morning, family members gather at their homes to hold memorial services in the honor of their ancestors called Charye. Formal Charye services are held twice a year during Seollal (New Year’s Day) and Chuseok. The difference between the two services is that during Seollal the major representative food is white tteok-guk, a rice cake soup, while during Chuseok the major representative food is freshly harvested rice. After the service, the family members sit down together at the table to enjoy some delicious food to symbolize their blessings.

- Beolcho (removing weeds around the grave) and Seongmyo (visiting ancestral graves)
Visiting ancestral graves during Chuseok is known as ‘Seongmyo’ and during this visit, family members usually cut the weeds that have grown around the graves in the summer season. Taking care of the ancestral graves such as removing weeds is called ‘Beolcho’. This custom is considered a duty and an expression of devotion. On the weekends, about one month prior to the Chuseok holidays, Korea’s highways become extremely congested with families visiting their ancestral graves to fulfill their ancestral duties.

- Ssireum (Korean wrestling)In the past, the strongest of the villagers gathered to hold wrestling competitions. The sport of wrestling on sand while being surrounded by spectators has become a traditional favorite in Korea. The last wrestler standing was considered the winner and was acknowledged as the villager’s strongest man and took home cotton, rice, or a calf as his prize. Today, Ssireum (Korean wrestling) competitions are still held as a folk competition, a one-on-one game to determine the strongest man in Korea.

- Ganggangsullae (Korean circle dance)
Mothers and daughters dressed in hanbok (traditional Korean dress) gather around in a circle, holding hands, and sing together. This dance originated from the Joseon Dynasty during the Japanese invasion when the Korean army dressed Korean mothers and daughters in military uniforms and had them circle a mountain peak to make the Japanese think the Korean military was greater in number than it actually was. Through this strategy, the Koreans were eventually able to defeat the Japanese.

- Chuseokbim (Chuseok dress)
Traditionally on Chuseok, the head of the household would buy new clothes for everyone, including the servants. This custom was known as Chuseokbim. Usually, a traditional hanbok is worn, but nowadays newly purchased clothes are not limited to hanbok. Today, families put on a modern type of hanbok called Chuseokbim and hold Charye services, and afterwards, they enjoy their time together.

Chuseok Food

Chuseok is a time for rich plentiful harvests. Therefore there are many fruits and newly harvested rice with which rice, tteok, and drinks are made from.

- Songpyeon
Songpyeon is one of the representative snacks of Chuseok. This rice cake is prepared with rice or non-glutinous rice powder that is kneaded into the perfect size, then filled with sesame seeds, beans, red beans, chestnuts, and a host of other nutritious foods. When steaming the songpyeon, the bottom of the rice cakes are layered with pine needles, which fill the rice cakes with their delightful fragrance. On the evening of Chuseok Eve, the entire family gathers together to make songpyeon under the bright moon. There is an old Korean saying that says that the person who makes the most beautiful songpyeon will meet a good-looking spouse. Therefore, the single members of the family try their best to make the nicest looking songpyeon as they laugh out loud in merriment.

- Alcoholic Beverages
Another major element of Chuseok is the alcoholic beverages. This traditional Chuseok drink is made of newly harvested rice and is also known as “The Hundred Year” Drink. People who look forward to this major holiday are also rich in generosity and like to share their generosity over drinks.

Now, it's time to go to Jeollanamdo. 'Buk' means the north and 'nam' means the south. So you can guess........^^ Yes!!!! Jeollanamdo is just below Jeollabukdo. If you look at the map which is located on "The tourist spot of Korea - 1 => Jeollabuk-do", you can see the red letters, '전라남도'. Also in jeollanamdo, there are a lot of beautiful places to go sightseeing and delicious food to eat just like jeollabukdo. Then, let's goooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!

1. Mountain, Naejang.

There was one more anecdote in which it earned the name 'Naejang'. A lot of valleys of Mt.Naejang resemble the gut of sheep. gut = 내장(naejang). So it got its name like that. There are lots of places to see, such as Wohwajeong, Daewungjeon, and other brooks. Its red maple leaves attracts a great number of people every year. If you appreciate it, you would admire it.

2. Lake, Okjeong

This lake was created due to the construction of the Dam, Sum-jin. About 500 years ago, one buddhist was straying near here and he prophesy that this place would be clear lake which meant the 옥정(okjeong) in korean. So the lake got to have its present name. The external beltway is famous drive course. And the image of brige which is observed through morning sprayer is also a memorable place.

7. Jeon bong-jun park.

Brief introduction of Mr. Jeon : He was born in Tae-in, Jeonbuk. When a corruptionist named Cho byeong gab exploited poor people, he gathered some people and attacked the cho. After this incident, struggle to venal administrators was expanded to the gamut of Jeonbuk and the goverment felt intimidated and requested to china and japan to send army to defend. Mr. Jeon, who didn't wanted foreign armies to come his own country, negotiated with government and disband the army. However, as japan started to reveal its perniciousness, Mr. jeon decided to raise army one more time to save his country. However, due to the poor armament and other factors, his army was defeated and finally he was executed with his colleagues. He was real patriot.

Hmm, about sun-chang....... This city is famous for '장', soybean paste.
Because I don't know this city that much, I would like to introduce so briefly.^^

Mountain, Gang-cheon
In earthscience class, my teacher have stated Mt, Gang-cheon so often ,but I can't remember why he mentioned it. At first, this mountain was called Mt, Yong-cheon. That's because this mountain is similar to the image of the dragon flying to the sky.
In early April, it is famous for cherry blossom, and in early November, it is famous for 'FLAMY' red maple leaves.

Jeon-ju - the largest city in Jeollabuk-do

Honam-jeil-mun. You can regard it as a entrance to Jeonju

Jeon-ju is the largest city in Jeollabuk-do. Since ancient times, it has been the central part of the Honam(the south-west part of Korea). So its history is so looong and along with its history, it has a variety of scenic spots to see and other cultural material such as food and special activities. Because I lived in Jeon-ju for about 5 years, it is intimate place for me.

This is the hanok-maeul. Han-ok is the traditional korean house in which upper privileged people, called Yang-ban, lived. About 700 Han-ok are located =>the largest scale in Korea. If you have been to the hanokmaeul in Seoul, you can notice that that of Jeonju is far better. Around the village, other historical sites, such as Gyenggi-geon, O-mok-dae,and Hyang-kyo are located, so you can enjoy further with them.

This is the Jeon-ju Traditional Culture Center. You can experience the making the tea, traditional playing, and making food such as bibimbab and kimchi.

This is called Hanbyeokdang. It is similar to the Soswaewon, isn't it? It seems that we can feel the breath of Sun-bi. Beautiful place.^^

Jin-an is a small city along with other cities in Jeollabuk-do except Jeonju, Ik-san,and Gun-san. Despite its small size, its natural environment is very clean.
The above mountain is called 'mountain,Ma-i'. Ma-i means the ear of the horse.
Ma-i=마이=馬耳 Do you understand why it is called mountain, Ma-i? ^^ That's because it resembles the ear of the horse. It is really look like that, isn't it?
It will be pleasant experience to take a walk to that mountain, enjoying the delicious food in Jin-an.

This valley(?^^) is called 'Un-il-am-Ban-il-am'. There are a lot of rock, and the valley is deep.
It earned the name of 'Un-il-am' because, before the road was paved, only cloud could pass through the valley^^; Ban-il-am: that's because the valley is so deep that people can only appreciate the view during half the day. 'Ban' means half. 'il' may be the day. 'am' may be the rock. 'un' is the cloud.^^ In these days, amenities are well constructed that a great number of people come to see the view. Don't you want to go to see?^^

Today, I want to introduce Muju to you. I have lived in there almost a year when I was a elementary school student. I remember now its clear and pure nature and friendly people. Although it is located in the deep mountains, due to the construction of the highway, the access becomes easier. If you go there, I think you could enjoy mountain climbing, skiing in the winter, swimming in the cool water, and delicious food.

In Muju, there is a mountain called Deok-yu-mountain(1614 meters), which is one of the National Park along with mountain Jiri. In the mountain you can enjoy the greenish forest, fresh air, cool brook, and historical temples, called 'Baek-ryun-sa'.
The picture of winter is the mountain, Deok-yu.

Especially the region called 'Gucheon-dong' is very famous. We can think that it is the central part of the Muju. Along with the reputation, it is boasting its 33 beautiful places. I will give you some of them.

Namwon is famous for its magnificent mountain, Jiri.

Mountain Jiri which is designated as the first National Park and one of Korean 8 places to travel and Korean 5 great mountains is giant and its scenery is nice. The height of this mountain is 1915m and it has 85 summits and 10 steep peaks such as Rabbit Summit, Banya Summit, Nogodan, and South Korean second High Mountain Cheonwang. So this mountain can be the representative Mt. in Korea.

This is the picture of Bamsa-gol which is famous in summer because of its coooolness.^^ It also has interesting allegory. About 1300 years ago, there was a temple near there. At that time, it was said that if a priest pray on Sin-sun rock in special day, then he or she will go into the celestial world. And many priests of Buddha went there and didn't come back. So most people believed that the people who disappeared became the taoist hermits. However, one priest thinked of it strange, and said to the king that that was strange. So the king gave him a poisoned clothes. After he came back to the temple, he gave the clothes to the another who was going to pray. After that day, the priest discovered that monster serpent was dead with the prayer. Since this incident, people said this valley 'Bamsa-gol' as in this valley, serpent was dead.

This is the building called 'Gwang-han-ru'. It is beautiful, isn't it?
It is the representative garden of Korea along with Soswaewon in Dam-yang and Gyeong-hwo-ru in Seoul. The whole garden is called Gwanghanru-won. You can enjoy the scenery,and feel the breath of the Sun-bi, scholar of Josun dynasty.

This is the picture of the Chun-hyang festival. This festival continues from 1,May to 5, May every year. You can experience a variety of traditional events.^^

This is the picture of Moyang castle(Gochang-eup castle). This natural stone fortress was built to defend aganist japanese attack during the first year of King Danjong's reign in 1453 of the josun dynasty.

이 사진은 모양성을 찍은 것 입니다. 이 자연석으로 만들어진 성은 조선 단종 1년(1453)에 일본의 침략을 막기 위해 세워졌습니다.

From 3, October to 7, October, there is a festival called Moyang-seong je. In the festival, you can enjoy Dab-seong nori, traditional wedding event, building a part of castle and other traditional events.

10월 3일부터 7일까지 모양성제라는 축제가 열립니다. 그 곳에서 당신은 답성놀이와 전통혼례체험, 성벽쌓기 체험 등 각종 전통 이벤트를 즐기실 수 있습니다.

Especially during Dab-seong nori, women walk around the bastion with stone placed their heads. It is said that the more you go around the castle, the older you can live your life. So it will be better for anyone who wants to live long to partcipate in this event. You can see this in above picture.

It is the picture of the Dolmen, Goindol in Korean. The Goindols in Gochang are registered as World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO around 2000.

This is the picture of Sun-un-sa. It is famous for red maple leaves so every fall a lot of people come here to see the leaves like fire^^ It is really beautiful and I experieced it firsthand.

In these days, Gochang is becoming famous for blue barley because a lot of adult who once lived in country when they were children miss that time. Although you don't feel it, it will be cool to walk around the road which is surrounded by barley

서울문화체험 ---- Seoul cultural tour with Foreigners

On 12, August, I participated in the seoul cultural tour. There were almost 60 people. First, we gathered in front of the Seoul city hall. By accident, it was under reconstruction and was covered wholly with Korean flag, "Tae-geug-gi". It is splendid, isn't it?^^

After check-up, we got on the bus and went to the "Leeum museum"

8월 12일 저는 서울문화체험에 참가했습니다. 60명 정도 있었고요. 먼저 서울 시청 앞에서 모였습니다. 우연히도 보수 공사중이었고 태극기로 덮여있더군요. 멋지죠?

The leeum museum

It contains a variety of art works and historical relics including crown, ornaments and so on. Thus, it would be very helpful to understand Korea superficially.
I wanted to take pictures .....due to the guards...............^^ I became bored. I think that that was due to my uninterest in art^^ It seems that those who enjoy appreciating the art works are great^^

Gyeong bok gung(Palace of Josun)

Today, I went to the Gyeong bok palace for a change by subway. The weather was cloudy, but fortunately it wasn't rain until I finished sightseeing.^^
The content of the picture is Seoul Metro Art-Museum. It is free and in the subway station.

오늘 기분전환겸 지하철을 타고 경복궁을 갔습니다. 날씨는 흐렸지만 운좋게 제가 관람을 마칠때 까지는 비가 내리지 않았습니다. 사진의 장소는 ~~입니다. 무료이고 지하철 역에 있습니다.

This picture is the second door of the palace. The first door called Gwang Hwa mun was under reconstruction. This is called Heung rye mun.

This is the entrance of the palace. Fortunately, today was the fourth Saturday of July, when for elementary, middle, and high school student, the entrance fee is free.^^

Geun jeong jeon. The main building of the palace. In front of it, the stones called Pum-gye suk is erected. Pum gye means grade. When the king held a meeting, all the retainers should stand in front of the stones which corresponded to them. The grade of the retainer is divided into 18 grades.

근정전. 주건물입니다. 그 앞에는 품계석이라는게 있습니다. 품계는 급을 의미하고요. 왕이 조회할 때 모든 신하들은 자신에 해당하는 품계석 앞에 서 있어야 했습니다. 총 18단계로 나뉘어집니다.

Miruksa-ji -suk -top-- the oldest stone tower in Korea

This is my school which is located next to the tower. In spring, the scenery of my school is so great that everyone who received my pictures of my school admired it. However, due to my mistake, I lost most of my pictures of it..........
Anyway, if you cross the right small hill, you can see the tower.

이것은 탑 옆에 있는 제 학교입니다. 봄에는 풍경 끝내주고요 그래서 제 학교 사진을 받은 사람 모두가 감탄을 아끼지 않았습니다. 하지만 제 실수로 사진 파일을 잃어버렸네요 ㅠㅠ 어쨌든 오른쪽의 작은 언덕을 넘어가면 탑을 볼 수 있습니다.

This picture was not taken by me. I could take a picture myself but due to my present residence........ I live far away from my school. So I couldn't take pictures of it. The image is about 5 years ago.

Miruksa-ji stone tower is the oldest and biggest stone tower in Korea but it was consisted of only six stages due to some natural disasters. And it is the 11th of National Treasures. It was built during the reign of King Mu(600~641, the king of Backjae Kingdom (B.C. 18 ~ A.D.660)). And it showed the process developing from wood tower to stone tower in Korea. So it is important cultural property.

Miruksaji-suktop is now being reconstructed because of its weakness. Furthermore, when it was damaged due to thunderstorm, Japanese cemented it. How stupid they were!!!! Anyway, so the tower looks like this.

미륵사지 석탑은 가장 오래되고 큰 한국의 석탑입니다. 자연재해로 인해 지금은 6층 밖에 남아 있지 않죠. 또 이건 국보 11호 입니다. 백제 무왕 때 세워졌고. 목탑에서 석탑으로 넘어가는 과도기의 형태도 보여주고. 중요한 문화적 자산입니다.

This tower is called Dong top because it is located at the east side. Miruksajisuktop is called seo top. The reason is you know^^
Dong top is known for its failure of reconstruction. The story connected with it is hmm complex. political problem and so on....

이건 동탑입니다. 동쪽에 세워져서. 아까 그 석탑은 서탑입니다.이유는 뭐 다 아시겠죠? 동탑은 재건의 실패작으로 널리 알려져 있습니다. 일화가 좀 복잡합니다. 정치적 문제 등등

Anyway, I hope people reconstruct seo top successfully.

I went on a picnic to Damyang, Jeollanamdo on May, 2008 with my classmates and teachers. In Damyang, we went to Soswaewon, Sikyoungjeong, Myenangjeong, Gasa(a kind of korea literature)-museum. These were so fantastic but due to broken ankle.....^^ It was so demanding to move around the places with crutches for me.^^ Furthermore, the hot weather.......

2008년 5월 전라남도 담양으로의 소풍 친구들 선생님들과 함께. 담양에서 소쇄원, 식영정, 면앙정, 가사박물관을 갔습니다. 너무 멋졌지만 제 부러진 발목 때문에......... 목발로 그 더운 날씨에 돌아다니는 건 고역이었죠....

Anyway, Soswae-won is located at Damyang-gun, Jellanam-do, Korea. It was built around 1530 by YangSanbo.
After his teacher Joegwangjo died due to Gimyeo-sahwa, Yang deserted the ambition of success in the government of Josun and came back to his hometown to live with nature itself. In his hometown, Damyang, he built soswaewon, which means 'clean and cool'. And if you go there, you will really feel the same thing.

어쨌든, 소쇄원은 담양군에 위치. 1530년 즈음해서 양산보에 의해 건립. 그의 스승 조광조가 기묘사화로 죽은 이후, 야심을 버리고 낙향해서 자연과 살았습니다. 고향 담양에서 '깨끗하고 시원하다'라는 의미를 지닌 소쇄원을 지었습니다. 가보면 진짜 그걸 느낄 수 있습니다.

Thick bamboo forest!!! small, neat, graceful buildings, murmurring brook, flowers, black chickens............ So nice nice nice!!!!!^^

두터운 대나무 숲, 작고 단정 우아한 빌딩, 졸졸 흐르는 시냇물, 꽃, 오골계 좋습니다.

I think that Soswaewon is a representative place where we can feel the life of Sunbi.
소쇄원이 선비의 생활을 느낄 수 있는 대표적 장소라고 생각합니다.

소쇄원의 흙벽입니다. 앞에 2명 제친구. 제 반은 남자 4, 여자 4으로 구성. 때때로 학생 수 많은 학교에 다니는 얘들이 부럽습니다. 하여튼, 이 벽 옆으로 걷는다면 좋겠죠?

They are black chickens. I couldn't find the right word indicating them in English. They are called O-gol-gye. They are black, right? Even the bones of them are also black^^ Isn't it singular and odd?

Surprisingly, they are more expensive than usual chicken!! I haven't eaten them but someday after I earn a lot of money, I will eat it for my own interest^^

이들은 오골계라 불리는 검은 닭. 영어로 적절한 단어 못찾았음....... 오골계라 불리고 뼈까지도 검습니다. 특이하죠? 놀랍게도 보통 닭보다 엄청 비쌈ㅋㅋ 아직 먹어보지는 못했지만 나중에 돈 많이 벌어서 먹을 겁니다.

The Gasa-museum is near Soswaewon. There, we could see a lot of artifact, video related to the history of Gasa, soswaewon, and other jeong ja including
Myeonang- jeong, Sikyoung-jeong and so on.
You can see me with crutches. It was hard.^^ I wish I had not had my ankle broken...whew........

가사 박물관은 소쇄원과 가깝습니다. 많은 유물 볼 수 있고, 가사 역사, 소쇄원, 면앙정이나 식영정같은 다른 정자들 비디오 시청 가능. 제가 목발 짚고 있는 거 보이시죠? 힘들었습니다.

I have been to Seoul to attend the meeting at the office of VANK.
While going there, at first, I was scared of subway. That's because it was my first time to get on a subway for myself^^. Luckily, there was no difficult to ride on it. However, it was hard to find the office on the ground. Though I had the mini map, I continued going around same place. Thanks to the hot and humid weather, you know^^
At last, I found right place and entered there. I was honored to directly see Gi-tae, Park, the leader of VANK and other Bo-mos. In conclusion, it was wonderful day!!!!

GIST Summer Research Camp

I have been to GIST(광주과학기술원) to participate in GIST summer research camp for 5 days with my 5 classmates. It was interesting. I experienced scientific ways to research. The usage of micro-pipette(It is usually 200 dollars!!!!), making solid agar culture, electrophoresis and so on.

China has almost 5000 years' history. It is almost same with Korea's. Due to this long history, china has a variety of culture which is accumulated during that period. Can you imagine the scale? It's wonderful!!! In addition, China now is developing their new contents using their accumulated culture to attract a lot of tourists. So, soon we will experience the wonder of them!!!
Along with the long history, there are many interesting stories like Samgukji, Suhoji, and so on. You can learn various lesson and way of life from them.
